Before Your First Consultation: 7 Things to Prepare
Life in the United States can present challenges that are difficult to resolve through an internet search alone. Educational and career planning for children, smartphone use for seniors, retirement preparation, social service information, employment, and starting a business all require personalized consideration. Because every person’s circumstances are different, general information alone may not be enough to make a well-informed decision.
Speaking with an experienced consultant can help you clarify the issue and identify practical options. Before requesting a consultation, however, taking a few minutes to organize your situation and questions can help you make much better use of the time available.
1. Describe the Main Issue You Want to Resolve in One Sentence
Before your consultation, try to summarize your primary concern in one sentence.
For example:
-
I would like to know when my child should begin preparing for college admission.
-
I would like to help my parents learn how to use a smartphone and schedule medical appointments online.
-
I would like to estimate my living expenses after retirement and understand what preparations I need to make.
-
I am trying to decide whether to pursue a new career or start a small business.
-
I would like to better understand essential information about living in the United States in Korean.
A one-sentence summary helps the consultant quickly identify the central issue. If several concerns are involved, begin with the one that is most urgent.
2. Briefly Summarize Your Current Situation
Even when people ask the same question, the most appropriate answer may differ. Available options can vary depending on age, family circumstances, location, occupation, experience, budget, goals, and timeline.
Before the consultation, consider briefly organizing the following information:
-
Your current situation
-
What you have already tried
-
The most difficult part of the issue
-
The outcome you hope to achieve
-
When you need to make a decision
-
What you would like to clarify during the consultation
You do not need to provide detailed personal information when making an initial inquiry. Share only the minimum information needed to identify the appropriate area of consultation. If additional documents are required, it is safer to submit them only after the consultation has been confirmed and you have received instructions.
3. Prepare About Three Questions
If you ask questions only as they occur to you during the consultation, you may overlook something important. Write down approximately three questions that you would like to have answered.
For an education consultation, for example, you might ask:
-
Based on the student’s current grades and activities, what should be improved first?
-
What should the student focus on during the next six months?
-
What can the family do at home to provide support?
For a senior digital-life consultation, you might ask:
-
What essential smartphone features should I learn to use?
-
What settings can help protect me from online scams?
-
How can I use the apps needed for medical appointments or banking services?
The more specific your questions are, the more specific and useful the consultation can be.
4. Understand the Scope of the Consultation
Consulting is a process that uses experience and information to help you clarify a problem and explore available options. It does not, however, replace professional legal, tax, financial, or medical advice.
Before requesting a consultation, confirm the following:
-
The topics covered during the consultation
-
Services that are not included
-
The length and format of the consultation
-
Whether the consultation is available online or in person
-
Consultation fees and any possible additional charges
-
Rescheduling and cancellation policies
-
Whether referrals to licensed professionals or specialized organizations are available when necessary
Understanding the scope of the consultation in advance can reduce the difference between your expectations and the services actually provided.
5. Do Not Include Sensitive Personal Information in Your Initial Inquiry
Your initial inquiry should contain only a general description of the issue. For your protection, do not enter the following information in a general inquiry form:
-
Social Security numbers
-
Bank account or credit card information
-
Complete tax returns
-
Medical records or insurance identification numbers
-
Copies of passports or driver’s licenses
-
Passwords for any account
-
Documents containing a student’s sensitive personal information
If specific documents are needed for the consultation, confirm how they should be submitted and how they will be used after the consultation has been scheduled.
6. Set Aside Time to Take Action After the Consultation
A productive consultation should lead to more than simply receiving information. Its value comes from putting the recommendations and action items into practice.
After the consultation, write down the following three things:
-
The first action you need to take
-
Any additional information you need to obtain
-
The date by which you intend to take action
Rather than trying to resolve everything at once, it is usually more practical to choose one or two tasks that you can complete during the following week.
7. Use the Consultation as a Resource for Making Your Decision
A consultant can explain available options and suggest a direction based on relevant experience and information. However, a consultant cannot make important personal decisions on your behalf.
Decisions involving education, retirement, taxes, real estate, immigration, or healthcare should be made after carefully reviewing the available information. When appropriate, you should also consult a qualified or licensed professional in the relevant field.
The primary purpose of a consultation is not simply to receive a predetermined answer. It is to better understand your circumstances and determine the most appropriate next step.
